When it comes to lowering your LDL cholesterol, you have a few options. First, you can take prescription medication, but these can carry some harmful side effects. A better solution is to switch over to a diet specifically tailored for lowering your harmful cholesterol numbers. As an added benefit, when you eat these excellent foods, your overall health will improve as well. So, what foods are the best to add to your diet when trying to bring down your cholesterol levels?
Nuts:
These little snacks pack a punch. Ounce for ounce, they are the best food to consume for your heart and they will lower your cholesterol as well. Though they are high in fat, it is nearly all monounsaturated in form, which is actually good for your arteries. In fact, just by eating a handful of this health food every day, you will be lowering your LDL cholesterol by at least ten percent over time. They taste great, too, so they should be a part of any healthy diet.
Fish:
Again, you may be surprised that high fat content food is good at lowering your LDL cholesterol. The key is the type of fat you consume, as the healthy omega-3 essential fatty acids found in fish are vital for your health. They work to lower inflammation and your cholesterol as well. Also, you will crave the harmful trans fats found in many prepackaged foods less when you consume more of these instead. Replace another type of meat with fish as your main course at least twice a week and you will begin to see results. For even better lowering effect, you can use fish oil supplements on a daily basis as well.
Oats:
When lowering your LDL cholesterol, oats should be on the front line. Oats are a great breakfast substitute for that cholesterol laden meal of bacon and eggs, which will ruin any progress you are trying to make. Not only are they low in cholesterol, their fiber binds to the cholesterol already in your system, hindering your body’s ability to hold onto it. This means your numbers will fall just from adding a bowl of this great tasting food to your morning routine.
Beans:
Another fiber-filled food, beans are a great addition to your plan through smart food choices. They are versatile and you have many different varieties to choose from, so you should have no trouble adding them to the menu at least three times a week. Also, they tend to satisfy you for long periods of time, meaning you will be less inclined to grab an unhealthy food later for a snack.
There you have the best foods for lowering your LDL cholesterol numbers safely and effectively. Why resort to dangerous drugs when simply eating well will bring you much greater benefits? You will never have damaging side effects when you select these great foods, and you will begin to feel healthier as a whole as well.

The NCEP recommends a diet low in saturated fats, trans fats and cholesterol. Complex carbohydrates are suggested in place of simple carbs.
Meat should become a very minor part of your diet. Replace fatty beef, pork and lamb with lean cuts or skinless white meat chicken or fish. Fat should be trimmed from all meats.
Always choose low fat or non-fat dairy products over whole milk or cream. Pretzels, carrots, popcorn, dried fruits and fresh fruits are a much better option than candy and potato chips. Store purchased bakery goods should be excluded from your diet.
Avoid butter or margarine when cooking and choose baking, broiling, steaming, roasting or stewing in lieu of frying. Stay away from coconut and palm oils since they are mostly saturated fat based.
Steer clear of all trans fats, they raise LDL and lower HDL.
The diet cholesterol connection
The first step in lowering your cholesterol should always be adopting a diet tailored for lowering cholesterol. Healthy eating habits should include the avoidance of saturated and trans fats. Those who have been regularly eating high fat foods and fried foods can lower their cholesterol levels as much as 25% by switching to a diet of lean meats, fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Always consider replacing a bad diet choice with a substitute. Instead of choosing a bacon cheeseburger and fried potatoes, select a lean grilled chicken breast or lean piece of meat 4 ounces or less and a baked potato, corn or salad.
Try to restrict your diet to include no more than 25% of your calories from fat. The NCEP guidelines also suggest consuming less than 200mg of cholesterol from food. Saturated fats are particularly dangerous because they stimulate the production of LDL cholesterol. Saturated fats can be identified by their appearance. They are solid or semi solid at room temperature. These include the fats found in eggs, some vegetable oils, meat, dairy products, coconut oil, cocoa butter, palm and palm kernel oils.
The opposite consistency is true for unsaturated, they are liquid at room temperature and are polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Some examples of polyunsaturated fats are fish oils, olive oil, cottonseed, safflower, peanut, canola and sesame. Where possible replace saturated fats with monounsaturated fats since this can help lower LDL cholesterol.
There are a number of people who do not respond enough from dietary changes. For these people it is recommended to increase intake of dietary fiber and increase intake of plant sterols and stanols.
There is a wide fluctuation in how different people respond to cholesterol in their diets. For some, high cholesterol diets have a direct causal effect on the amount of cholesterol in their blood stream. Others who consume high fat, high cholesterol diets have low levels of cholesterol in their blood streams. Since there are no reliable tests to know your individual profile, it is recommended that you adopt healthy eating habits and a low cholesterol and low saturated fat diet. If this helps, you know what you need to do. If not, seek alternatives to help.
Some of you might think that eating a well-balanced diet for adults is considered healthy food for children as well. This is not entirely true. Although there is nothing really wrong with kids eating a nutritious adult meal, kids require a specific nutritional profile to fully address their growth and development needs. It is vital to cook healthy food for children not only to supply their specific nutritional requirements, but also to provide a solid foundation for proper nutrition that lasts well into adulthood.
The Four Food Groups
Back in the day, I grew up in a family where healthy food for children consists of the four major food groups and the food pyramid. My parents educated us on the value of proper nutrition at a very young age. We used to have milk and cereal for breakfast, meat and vegetables for lunch and dinner, and fruits in between and after meals. Junk food was rare and we were asked to eat healthy alternatives instead.
The same is true today. Healthy food for children still follows the same philosophy: grains, dairy, meat, fruits, and vegetables. Kids should never fall into a food rut. It is important to experiment with new flavors each month. Cooking healthy food for children should include a variety of food flavors. As soon as kids can eat hard food, try to mix new food pairings that will entice their palate and appetite. A variation of flavor in healthy food for children can help open their minds to the wonders of healthy eating. This will become an invaluable skill as they grow older.
Be Wary of the Fast Food Habit
Some parents find it hard to cook healthy food for children due to their demanding schedule. The best way to save time is to prepare simple, delicious, and nutritious meals. You can get recipe ideas from books, magazines, and even online. Try meal planning to save time and energy in deciding what to cook for the coming weeks. Try not to reward kids with fast food, and don’t let it be your default meal due to a busy schedule. I’m not suggesting that you should never eat fast food again. The important thing to remember is that fast food can be a tempting excuse not to cook healthy food for children.
Invite Kids in the Kitchen
What better way to entice your kids to eat healthy than to invite them in the kitchen. The next time you’re cooking healthy food for children, ask them to help you wash, stir, or prepare the ingredients. Cooking healthy food for children is a great way to bond with your kids, while teaching them simple cooking techniques, proper nutrition, and food appreciation. There’s a higher chance for kids to eat new foods that are healthy when they are involved in the preparation.

It’s a new year and many are anxious to start their diet off on the right foot, maybe lose a few pounds, eat better and make smarter food choices overall. Here is a list of great, healthy food substitutes for your usual choices that will help you keep your New Year’s Resolution. They are lower in fat, calories but high in taste!
Love chocolate milk but not so fond of the stomach pain and gas you get afterward? There is a new healthy choice available and it’s not soy! As a lactose intolerant woman, I typically drink soy and rice milk, but my latest choice is wonderful, especially in chocolate and it’s Almond Milk! It has such a clean taste and you’d swear you were drinking the real thing! You’ll want to look in your grocer’s healthy/organic or dairy case. They offer a shelved brand as well, but the refrigerated kind is the best. This yummy treat is from the makers of nuts, Blue Diamond Natural Almond Breeze. Even if you’re not lactose intolerant, it only has 120 calories and has less fat than even soy so drink up!
Do your kids adore grilled cheese sandwiches but avoid them due to the lactose? One great option for cheese slices is ‘Veggie Slices’ found in the vegetarian section of the dairy case and/or produce area. They offer flavors like cheddar, mozzarella, American, jalapeno, smoked provolone and the best thing is they are low calorie, cholesterol free and have 0g of trans fat! The Veggie Slices brand also offers regular bricks of “cheese” as well as shredded and they are all fantastic, you’d swear they were dairy!
The avocado is a great delicacy and when you want to whip up some guacamole or just put some slices on your salad it’s great to know there is a low fat option. A large avocado trademarked as the “SlimCado” let’s you eat this wonderful fruit (that’s right, if you didn’t know it, the avocado is actually a fruit!) without piling on the calories. It is still meaty like a regular avocado but does have a slightly higher water content, so it’s best used in guacamole. These are about 3 times the size of a regular one and a little can go a long way.
Canned fruit and veggies, if you’re not careful in your selection, can have loads of syrup, sugar and salt! This is not great if you are looking to make healthier choices. You do have options though! Fresh is always best if you can get it and if it is affordable, next best is frozen as it has been proven to have all of the nutrient content as fresh, and last would be canned. With the economy pushing grocery prices to a record high in the past few years, more people are turning to canned goods. Look at the label and ensure that it has no added salt or sugar. When looking at the ingredients you’ll want to avoid anything that has syrup, corn syrup, fructose, sucrose, or added sweeteners. These add unwanted sodium and calories that are not needed. If you can’t get any without these ingredients, be sure to drain the juices and wash the contents well before using.
Is your weakness cookies? Like many, cookies are a favored treat and comfort food. After all, most are loaded with butter, margarine or some type of hydrogenated oil, loads of sugar and often white flour. There are many new organic and non-organic healthy options that include whole grains, a lot less sugar and healthier oils used. A great one that I adore is the Kashi TLC cookie. They are chewy but add some crunch and one cookie is enough for me, so one box can go a long way. The flavor choices are happy trail mix, oatmeal dark chocolate and oatmeal raisin flax. These powerhouses offer low sugar, seven whole grains, 0g of cholesterol, 3g of fiber and only 130 calories per large cookie!
If you enjoy popsicles and sorbets as a fun fruity treat, here’s a super easy recipe to make some at home to avoid paying a premium on packaged healthy options at the grocery store. I really like Edy’s fruit bars and they are a fantastic, cool treat option! However, with their recent price hike I refuse to pay their now $4 price tag so I’m making my own. I have little Tupperware cups with lids (about ¾-1 full cup in size) Use whatever fruit you have or buy some fresh or frozen fruit. My favorite is blueberry-mango. I put frozen blueberries and store bought 100% pure frozen mango pulp into my food processor. Give it a few pulses until really smooth then pour into the cups to freeze. This is great for kids! No added sugar, no fat, just 100% fruit and SO yummy! You could try bananas, strawberries, raspberries, kiwis, blackberries as well! For something zingy, add in some orange or pineapple juice. No need for popsicle sticks, you can eat it out of the cup with a spoon.
Veggies and dip can be a staple at parties and they can appear healthy until they are coated with dip that is usually high in fat, high in salt and is typically one made from dairy. If you haven’t tried it or you’re used to buying it from the grocery store, now is the time to make your own hummus! Hummus’ main ingredient is chickpeas also known as garbanzo beans. You can buy a can, drain them, wash them and then dump them in your food processor with a clove of garlic, some pepper and a bit of sea salt to taste and some tahini. I just use what I have in the house, so I usually wind up using ground cumin which has a nice flavor too. Add a tbsp of olive oil and pulse until smooth and creamy looking. Hummus is great for a spread on cracker, bread or a dip for veggies, and anyone can eat it whether your vegan, vegetarian or lactose intolerant.

Today, it is hard for us to prepare healthy meals because we are busy, we don’t have time to cook. We prefer to eat processed food which is not really nutritious and it has chemicals that can destroy our health. We eat a lot of chips, junk food and drink a greater amount of soft drinks and alcohol. This stuff is not healthy food. It makes our body prone to sickness.
Eating healthy food does not mean that you need to deprive yourself of eating the food you love. It means staying healthy, feeling energetic, being in good shape so that we can enjoy our life to the fullest. Healthy eating can be done by choosing the right food.
Our body needs healthy foods, low in fats and cholesterol. Eat a bigger meal during breakfast. Don’t ever skip meals because it makes your body weak and you will get sick. Avoid too much alcohol because it is bad for your health. Eat slowly it prevents overeating and obesity.
We should eat a large amount of vegetables and fruits for they are healthy foods. We get vitamins and nutrients in that food. It strengthens our immune system, it means we stay well even other people are getting sick. We are physically fit, mentally alert and physically active individual. It prevents sickness and diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol and obesity.
When we eat a lot of unhealthy foods, we spend a lot of money especially when we get sick. What if you don’t have money? You’re going to suffer pain and die. What we eat reflects how we take good care of our body.
We should develop a healthy eating habit before it is too late. Drink a lot of water because it cleanses our body. Don’t eat a lot during dinner because your metabolism works more slowly and it digests less. Avoid eating fatty foods like french fries because they contain Trans fat. A big part of enjoying healthier eating is buying healthier foods, and that means making smart choices where it matters most – at the supermarket. Choosing the freshest, healthiest foods is an important first step toward making healthy and delicious meals your whole family will love.
In general, most supermarkets are laid out with the healthiest, most nutritious foods around the perimeter of the store. That is where most stores locate their produce section, their dairy section, their meat counter, and the like. Of course, the middle aisles of the grocery store also contain nutritious foods, such as canned and frozen vegetables, whole grain cereals and more.
And of course each shelf of the grocery store also contains both good and bad choices for healthy eating. For instance, the cereal aisle is home to both the healthy, home grain cereal, and those cereals that contain more sugar than corn. In many cases, the difference will be obvious from the packaging, while at other times you will need to read the nutritional information carefully to ensure the food is healthy for your family.
As a matter of fact, learning to read nutritional labels is one of the most important skills any health oriented shopper must learn. This government mandated labels contain a wealth of information if you know what to look for. Not only do nutritional labels contain vital information on calorie counts, fat grams and sodium content, but they contain detailed information on the percentage of each vitamin an mineral a serving contains.
When looking at nutritional labels, however, pay careful attention to the portion size listed. This is particularly important when looking at calories, fat grams and the amount of sodium. For instance, a serving of juice is generally 8 ounces, while the average juice glass at your home may be 12 or even 16 ounces. It is important to carefully look at serving size, and to do the mental calculation necessary to reflect how much of each product will actually be consumed at one sitting.
When shopping for healthy foods, it is usually better to opt for less processed foods. For instance, 100% fruit juice would be better than a fruit juice blend that may contain as little as 5% or 10% fruit juice. And plain frozen vegetables would be healthier than vegetables in a butter sauce. When shopping for meat, try to buy fresh meat whenever possible. Frozen meat products, or those already seasoned, heat and eat products, often contain unhealthy ingredients as well as preservatives.
When it comes to dairy products, it is best to buy low fat and non fat varieties when at all possible. The one exception to this rule is feeding babies and young children. Their growing bodies need the fat and calories contained in whole milk products, but adults and older children are better served by low fat alternatives.
When choosing canned soups, there are a number of fat free and low sodium varieties. Try to choose these soups for a healthier lifestyle. Other high protein, low calorie soup choices include black bean soup, lentil soup and split pea soup. These healthy soups are good sources of protein, fiber and folate.
Ethnic foods, such as Mexican and Chinese, can be excellent sources of healthy meals, and the traditional ways of preparing such foods are generally very healthy. It is important to stay as authentic as possible when choosing and preparing Mexican, Asian, Middle Eastern and Italian food. This will help guarantee both great taste and healthy eating. For instance, traditional salsa is an excellent, low calorie, and nutritious dip, and the traditional Mexican black bean dip is usually fat free.
Seasonings can be an excellent way to spice up healthy cooking without adding additional fat and calories. Herbs and spices are a great way to add zest to any meal, and starting an herb garden of your own is a great way to save both time and money while providing fresh tasting, healthy meals for your family. When buying spices in the grocery store, be especially careful about sodium content. Read the label carefully, since the first ingredient on many bottled spices is actually salt (another great reason to start that herb garden).
